Founding a Juggernaut
To understand how the company got started, you’ll need to know a little bit about its founders. J.C. Mahindra was India’s first Steel Controller, right at the beginning of World War II when the steel trade was most critical.
His brother, K.C. Mahindra, another industrialist, was chairman of the Indian Coal Fields Committee of the Government of India and the Automobile and Tractor Panel.
Finally, Malik Ghulam Muhammad worked as a financier for the government. When their public duties ended, the three decided to start their own company, initially known as Mahindra & Muhammad, which would later change to Mahindra & Mahindra when Muhammad left the company.
Building the Company
When the company was first founded in 1945, they primarily assembled jeeps and produced steel to assist in the war effort. They continued to perform these tasks until 1961 when they joined with International Harvester to build their first tractor. As you might already know, the tractor would go on to become one of their most popular products here in the United States. They’re famous for their durability and innovation.
Their product line continued to expand, eventually adding UTVs, partially thanks to the western connection they gained through International Harvester. Their products also speak for themselves. Today, they have a number of other branches, including financial services, IT, and infrastructure development.
