Tips to Extend the Life of Your ATV
The better you maintain your ATV, the longer it will last. That’s true whether you use your quad for hunting, trail riding, or utility work. If you don’t know much about ATV maintenance and would like some tips on how to extend your vehicle’s effective lifespan, these tips from the experts at Stoneham’s Motorsports can help get you started.
Change the Oil and Coolant
Oil helps the moving parts inside your ATV’s engine to glide against each other instead of rubbing or scraping. By making sure that your oil levels are topped off and the oil itself is in good condition, you’ll help make the engine last longer. Since frequent overheating is bad for an engine, you’ll also want to keep a close eye on the coolant and cooling system. Besides checking on the fan and radiator cap, keep your coolant levels high and make sure that the coolant itself is still in good condition.
Clean Your ATV Regularly
ATVs are built to handle dirty conditions, but allowing grime to remain caked on your quad for too long can encourage rust. Dirt can also clog up your filters and harm your engine. The occasional wash doesn’t just help your ATV to look better, it helps your ATV last longer.
Check the CV Belt
Many, though not all, ATV models use a CV belt transmission. This belt can get worn down over time. While a non-mechanic usually won’t be able to tell that a CV belt needs to be replaced just by looking at it, you’ll usually notice performance issues or a burning rubber smell. If you have any concerns, ask a professional for their opinion.
Treat Your Fuel
Untreated fuel can start to break down and clog your fuel lines. If you ever need to store your ATV for a long period, be sure to add a fuel stabilizer to the tank.
Ride Wisely
The harder you push your ATV, the more long-term maintenance it will require. This doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t enjoy your quad to the fullest. Just know your vehicle’s limits and avoid doing anything reckless.
